Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that occurs with an incidence of approximately 1% among individuals over the age of 60, and its prevalence increases as the population ages. Statistics show that Parkinson's disease is currently the fastest-growing neurological disorder. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by the year 2040, the number of Parkinson's patients in the Southeast Asian region is projected to double, from around 6 million to 12 million. In Thailand, the number of Parkinson’s patients is also increasing in a similar pattern.
According to epidemiological data from the WHO, a survey conducted in Thailand between 2008 and 2011 found that there were more than 60,000 people living with Parkinson's disease, or about one-third of the elderly population and approximately 242.57 cases per 100,000 elderly individuals. The incidence of Parkinson’s disease in Thailand is showing an upward trend, in line with the country’s current transition into an aging society.
